Welsh Under 19's Season 2008/09

Welsh Under 19´s Event 3 / Rileys Newport / 15 March 2009

Duane Jones (Aberdare) the Under 16’s Welsh Team Captain won the Welsh Under 19’s Championship in Rileys Newport yesterday beating Jamie Tudor (Llanelli) in the final by 3-0. A total of 46 players entered this tournament which was the last Under 19’s Event of the season.

Quarter Finals

The last 8 produced wins for Jak Jones who defeated Thomas Vedmore 2-0, Duane Jones beat Kristian Phelps 2-0 and Michael White and Jamie Tudor had (2-0) wins against Michael Hughes and Daniel Norris.

Semi Finals

The ever improving Jones who I am sure is destined for higher honours played some excellent snooker throughout, followed this up defeating the No 1 ranked player Jak Jones (Cross Keys) 2-1 aided by an excellent 87 break.

The game between Michael White and Jamie Tudor was decided in the last frame. With the score at 1-1 each Tudor came from behind to beat White with the aid of an 87 break after Michael had made an early 52 break. An excellent game by both players.

Final

The final produced some good snooker and although Jones won (3-0) the match was a much closer game than the score suggests.

The plate competition was won by David Huxton who won his second Plate competition in succession beating Dale Lawrence (Swansea) 2-1 in the final.

The top two or possibly three ranked players will now represent Wales at the European Under 19’s Championship in St. Petersburgh, Russia in March. (The winner of this will be invited to turn professional the following season).

Michael White who won this event two years ago will be hoping for a repeat performance, however, if Wales are only allocated two players White will first have to overcome Jamie Tudor in a play off for the second place on the trip as they are currently tied on 900 points.

Welsh Under 19´s Event 2 / Aberaman Cue Club / 21 December 2008

The unseeded Michael White reached the final of this second under 19s ranking event of the season after a tough quarter final against junior international Duane Jones and a very tough semi final against Jamie Tudor. Jamie had beaten Michael in both their previous meetings this season and almost made it three in a row before Michael managed two 30 plus breaks in the deciding frame to book his place in the final.

Winner of the tournament was Jak Jones (Cross Keys) a much improved player beating Jamie Tudor 3-1 in the final which included a break of 83 by Jak and a 65 by Jamie. In the earlier rounds Jak also had some good wins against the Welsh Junior International Captain Duane Jones 2-0 and Thomas Moss 2-0. In the bottom half of the draw he also had a fine win over Llanelli’s Jamie Clarke by 2-1.

The final itself was something of an anti climax as both players struggled on an extremely tight table. However Michael White handled the conditions slightly better than his opponent and aided by a break of 74 in frame two took his second ranking event win of the season by 3 – 1.

Jak Jones (Cwmbran) came through the bottom half of the draw with a fine Semi-final win over fellow Junior International Jamie Clarke (Llanelli) a match which included an 83 break by Jak and a 65 by Jamie.
