Celtic Challenge 2010
Wales v Rep. Ireland
The Annual “Celtic Challenge” junior snooker event took place at the Terry Griffiths, Matchroom club in Llanelli on Saturday 26th June.
The Wales under 14s team, and the Wales under 16s team took on their counterparts from the Republic of Ireland. The Irish are always strong at both levels but despite this and the fact that both Welsh teams were very inexperienced at international level, Wales came out on top, reclaiming the magnificent “Celtic Challenge” cup.
Every player in the team played 3 frames against every player in the opposing team, with each frame counting towards the final result.
It was a long day for players and officials alike said Welsh coach John Dobson Our youngsters, especially the under 14s were superb. I was really proud of every one of them. This result augers well for the Home International Championships later this year when I am sure we will again do very well.
Under 14's – Wales 73 V Rep. Ireland 35
Under 16's - Wales 56 V Rep. Ireland 52
Overall result - Wales 129 V Rep. Ireland 87
Welsh team captain Nathan Davenport received the trophy from Mr Gordon Pantall (Wales) and Mr Jim Lacy (Ireland) who were the original inaugurates of this tournament which has become one of the most eagerly awaited events on the snooker calendar.
The conditions at the Terry Griffiths Matchroom were as usual first class and the Welsh Billiards and snooker association would like to thank everyone at the club for the use of the excellent facilities.
